When people think about healthcare, they usually think about doctors, nurses, and pharmacists. They are the professionals we see directly when we visit a hospital.

But there is another group of healthcare workers who often remain behind the scenes: Medical Laboratory Scientists (MLS), also known as Clinical Laboratory Scientists.

Most people do not know much about clinical pathology or biomedical laboratory science. Many patients only see the moment when their blood is collected in the phlebotomy room, but they rarely think about what happens after that sample leaves their hands.

Behind every blood tube, urine sample, or tissue specimen, there is a laboratory process involving trained professionals who analyze, interpret, and verify results before they reach physicians.

I am still a student in Clinical Laboratory Science, but during my clinical training, I had the opportunity to see these professionals working in real hospital settings. I watched laboratory staff carefully handle patient samples, perform tests, and make decisions that require both technical knowledge and responsibility.

The work may happen away from the public eye, but it directly affects patient care.

Clinical pathology is the branch of medicine that focuses on diagnosing diseases through laboratory testing. It includes areas such as hematology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, immunology, blood banking, and molecular diagnostics.

When a doctor orders a complete blood count (CBC), checks liver enzymes, identifies bacteria causing an infection, or performs blood typing before a transfusion, clinical laboratory professionals are involved in that process.

We may not always be the people patients meet first.

Sometimes we work behind the scenes, making sure that accurate information reaches the medical team. Other times, our work becomes the starting point for a diagnosis and treatment plan.

This is the world of clinical pathology: a field where science, technology, and healthcare come together to answer one important question — what is happening inside the patient’s body?

Role of Clinical Pathologists

The Different Areas of Clinical Laboratory Science

Clinical laboratory science is not a single field of testing. It is a profession divided into several specialized areas, with each section focusing on different aspects of patient diagnosis and care.

Depending on the hospital and laboratory system, Medical Laboratory Scientists may work in areas such as hematology, clinical chemistry, immunology, microbiology, blood banking (transfusion medicine), molecular diagnostics, pathology, and emergency laboratory services.

Each department requires different knowledge and skills. Hematology focuses on blood cells and disorders such as anemia and leukemia, while clinical chemistry analyzes substances in blood related to organ function and metabolism. Microbiology identifies infectious organisms, and blood banking ensures safe transfusions for patients. Immunology examines immune responses and diseases, molecular diagnostics detects genetic and infectious materials, and pathology helps evaluate tissue and cellular changes.

Although these areas may seem different, they share one common purpose: providing accurate laboratory information that helps healthcare professionals understand what is happening inside the patient’s body.

Importance of Laboratory Tests

Laboratory tests are invaluable tools in clinical pathology, as they help identify conditions ranging from infections to chronic illnesses.
